Paul Kalkbrenner - Berlin Calling / DEMF live set

Look at his mirror balls shine!

I got the Berlin Calling DVD for my friend Paul at Christmas and we only just watched it a couple of weeks ago. I knew the soundtrack would be good but I didn't expect it to be a great film as well. Kalkbrenner plays Ickarus, a DJ trying to produce a new album while struggling with drug problems. It moves along at a fair clip punctuated with deadly tunes. And Kalkbrenner can ACT. I loved it. We kept turning the volume up when a song came on. It got pretty loud. I'd recommend watching it before you go out, because you're going to want to go out after anyway.

I went to see Akira in Lighthouse Cinema last week - as part of their Fight House season - a load of action flicks picked by Gareth Evans (who directed The Raid). I hadn't seen it in about 8 years and never before in the cinema. It pretty much blew my mind. I'd forgotten everything about it, including how awesome the soundtrack is:



It was also slick it was the non dubbed version, with english subtitles, made it even cooler. This HD clip is dubbed, which makes sense as it's an animated film, but it was even cooler in Japanese.

Chris Coco's Melodica radio show

Something a little bit different with this radio show - some pretty experimental stuff - but don't let that put you off. Apparently you don't have to listen to banging tunes all day. It also has a tune from One Little Plane as well, whose new album is produced by Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet), so that's worth a listen. Happy Sunday.
